Pinot Gris is a mutation of Pinot Noir, so the grapes have pinkish skin but produce a white wine that ranges from pale yellow to deep gold. The German name, Grauburgunder or Grauer Bugunder, translates to “Grey Burgundian,” reflecting the grape’s origins in Burgundy, France.
Vinified in stainless steel or oak, German Pinot Gris runs the gamut from delicate, easy-drinking, fruity, and fresh to complex, rich, and age-worthy. It typically denotes a dry, medium-bodied wine reminiscent of lime, green apple, honey, and quince with fairly lively acidity.
